Best Wedding Planning Advice
Best wedding budgeting advice I can give? The couple needs to decide for themselves what's most important and devote their time and money accordingly.
For some, the dress is THE most important thing. I don't really care about the dress so I bought mine for $250 from JCrew (and it was really nice).
Some folks insist on having a photo album done by their photographer. We got the digitals and did it ourselves on peekabo (Snapfish, Shutterfly all have options) and are very happy with the final product.
What did we spend money on? Good food and an open bar. But the point is, decide for yourselves what you want to do.
The second best advice I got? No matter what you decide on each detail, someone won't like it. You can't please everybody. it's your wedding so make sure you are happy with what you do.
Any other wedding tips out there?

| We made a few mistakes with our wedding... we took out a loan to pay off our credit cards, only to charge them back up again in hopes of a 'big pay off'. Don't assume people are going to give you money on the big day. In today's economy people just don't have it anymore. I was taught by my mother that you should give the happy newlyweds the amount that you and your dates meal costs. I always do this and we made the assumption most of our guests would to the same...we got maybe 10% of the cost back. But we were smart and saved elsewhere - we made our own invitations for under $150 - including postage to the guests and for the RSVPs ( 125 invites went out). We also assembled our own favors ( personalized shot glasses $.65, 4 lbs personalized m&ms $50, little bags $.05 each) and everyone loved them! Use the internet and find bargains! we used different sized white column candles on clear white plates - total for all of our centerpieces was about $125 and i have a ton of candles around my apartment that fit in beautifully! Just hot glued gorgeous ribbon around the center to match our colors. Start off your planning with setting limits to each area of the wedding... also forgo all of the flowers! Just do the bouquets - and do as another poster stated, find a small florist, they charge much less! our neighborhood florist did all of the bouquets ( gerbera daisies) and the bouteneers and corsages for groomsmen and parents ( orchids and cala lillies) for $200!! and mind you this is in NYC! |
| My wife and I were able to save quite a bit of money by hiring self-employed professionals. Our florist was just starting her own business and was operating out of her basement (we didn't care where she kept the fridges or where she worked - her prices were great and she did fantastic work!). We also purchased a lot of the things that the church and banquet hall wanted to rent us, but resold them afterward (4' columns for plants, votive holders, etc). |
