We are heading into Valentine’s Day season – you know, that seemingly made-up holiday that gives us an excuse to get dressed up, go out for expensive dinners and buy gifts for our significant others.

I don’t mean to be cynical – Valentine’s Day has legitimate origins, according to its entry on Wikipedia. But have you noticed how flowers get more expensive around that day? It’s hard not to think about the connections between love and money on a day like this where showing your love always seems to be associated with flexing your credit card muscles.

What’s money got to do with love, you ask? Probably more than we care to admit. It’s true that money can’t buy love – well, for most people anyway. But it can destroy love relationships if not handled well.

Check out the LifeTuner video below in which we stopped people on the streets of San Francisco to see whether money has ever gotten in the way of love or other relationships.

Maybe this year it’s time to be creative with your Valentine and institute a no-spend V-Day. Hey, that could even be way more fun than the usual, which can easily cost you a few hundred dollars.

Also, if you are struggling with how to approach money issues with your loved one, listen to the LifeTuner Podcast Episode 6: Money & Relationships, with Motley Fool writers Robert Brokamp and Dayana Yochim. The two share insights about to sort out and avoid money problems in your most important relationships.
