If you missed out on the recent LifeTuner Expert Chat with Denise LaBuda, "How to Talk to Your Kids About Money," you can check out the recording of the event in this post below.

It was a lively chat, where Denise covered a lot of techniques parents can use on children as young as three and five years old. Some of the key takeaways were:

  • When teaching basic budgeting skills, have your kids divide their money into three parts: one part they will save, one part they will share, and one part they can spend.

  • People are born as either spenders or savers. You'll see this characteristic in even the youngest children.

  • Don't make money decisions invisible. Involve your kids in family discussions about money. Keeping them in the dark is not going to help them understand how bills are paid, problems are solved or big purchases are planned.

Denise is a money education activist and is developing a new Web site, www.moneywizdom.com, that will launch later this month. The site will offer some basic tools to parents, including a weekly email with ideas and tips on how to work with your kids on money learning.
